This episode begins with the contrast between logos and mythos, which the ancient Greeks considered the two primary ways of reporting on life’s events. If the power of logos is reason, the power of myth is imagination. The ideas of logos are supposed to clearly state the facts of the matter; while the narratives of mythos reveal underlying truths and what matters most to us.

Hypocrisy names a third form of narration that happens when people are not faithful to either the facts of logos or the truths of mythos. An old idea that suggests that hypocrisy can be more dangerous than crime. For when hypocrisy becomes habitual in the halls of power, crimes are being committed against the soul of the country.

Michael Meade uses an old myth to depict how the heights of hypocrisy can only lead to greater division and distrust in the body politic, and increasing tragedy and suffering in the hearts of the people.
